  • Older travelers

very friendly staff Hotel in central position

  • Group of friends

Staff extremely friendly and helpful (thanks!). Great town centre location. Reasonably-priced menu on offer but opportunity also to walk to several decent restaurants close by. Shops on the doorstep.

  • Older travelers

Sadly, except for the venue there was nothing we liked about this hotel. The room was not particularly comfortable and there was only one bedside lamp. It was very noisy due to the Market. Anyone staying here should ask for a room not overlooking the square. The staff appeared unconcerned with our complaints.

We were disappointed. The room smelt of soot and were told on leaving it was an old building and birds nested in chimney! Our room overlooked the Market Square and the noise from 5.30 was unbelievable as were the lorries and motorbikes during the night. On complaining we were told they could not control the noise but I would have thought we could have been given a room at the back since there appeared to be very few people in the hotel and we would not have known it was Market Day For breakfast we just ordered toast and coffee. The coffee was 'instant' which I do not drink and the toast was served flat on a plate so quickly went soggy. We will not stay here again.

The very friendly owner and staff made the over night stay very comfortable..

The matress has seen better days..

  • Older travelers

Central location, big airy rooms wholly unlike the sterile, identical boxes found in purpose-built modern hotels.

  • Single

loved the pub atmosphere the large bedroom suite overlooking the high street and market food good and plenty of it

  • Older travelers

    Very good restaurant, friendly staff.

The facilities were old and tired. The room was very small, and there was no ensuite, although at the price other hotels would definitely have provided one. The staff were lovely but the landlady was unreliable, and her attitude and actions detracted from the enjoyment of the visit.

  • Single

Needs a bit of tlc and didn't realise the room wasn't ensuite.....Don't stay on a Wednesday night if you want to sleep later than 05.00am as the Market gets set up outside your window at this time.

  • Older travelers

Staff friendly and helpful.Location well positioned in town centre.

Not really a hotel- more a pub with letting rooms.Disappointed room was not en-suite. Expected this for the money. Room small, creaky beds and floorboards.Ancient bathroom shared with several other rooms.Water pressure in shower poor-shower control switch fell off.Breakfast good one day, poor the next.

  • Older travelers

The location was the only really good point and the breakfast was quite nice.

The room was so tiny that the double bed was against a wall and so there were no bedside cabinets or lights. It was impossible to close the curtains in the bedroom as furniture was pushed against the window. There was no ensuite which I was not aware of prior to arriving and the blind in the communal shower room was broken so could not be let down, the toilet pan being right at the window. The carpet was dirty and stained and the room was not cleaned during our stay - the cups were washed and more coffee sachets put in the room but the bed remained unmade and dirty towels left on the floor. There was also an extractor fan under the bedroom window on the outside which made it noisy.

  • Couple

location was good as was the size of the room we had

it was a very old fashioned and not very well maintained room- flaking paint and loose flooring in the bathroom, cheap furniture & fittings and no bathroom toiletries except soap. Breakfast tasted cheap and cheerful as if from a supermarket value range, nothing wrong with it but we felt £80 was too much for a room and breakfast of this standard- would have been happy to pay £50 or £60

  • Family with children

all the staff where very helpfull.polite.the food was excellent.i would stay there if i was staying in that airea of sudbury

  • Single

Breakfast was very good and the meals were good and value for money.Beer kept very well.

Not having on suite and also cellar cooling fan just out side of the window

  • Older travelers

Very attentive and friendly staff. The Blackboy is in an interesting position in the market place of the attractive town of Sudbury, but our room facing the market was quiet. Our evening meals were very good and reasonablely priced. The full English breakfast was splendid

  • Older travelers

The staff were amazing they went the extra mile to ensure we had a pleasant stay. The hotel itself was full of character, very comfortable and centrally located. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would have no hesitation in staying there again.
